Footage circulating on social media has captured the harrowing moment an Israeli military strike hit a tent camp housing displaced Palestinians in Deir el-Balah, located in central Gaza. The videos, verified by Al Jazeera, show the devastating impact of the strike on the makeshift settlement, which had become home to civilians who fled fighting in other parts of the territory.
The displacement camp in Deir el-Balah is among numerous such settlements that have emerged across Gaza as Israel's military offensive has continued, forcing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes. Many civilians had sought refuge in central Gaza after being told to evacuate northern areas and other conflict zones, with tent camps becoming a increasingly common sight across the strip.
The strike adds to growing international concern over the safety of displaced civilians in Gaza, where the United Nations and various humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned about the dangers facing those sheltering in makeshift camps. Despite designations of certain areas as relatively safer zones, strikes have continued to hit locations where displaced populations have gathered.
Deir el-Balah has seen a significant surge in its population as a result of the ongoing conflict, with the area absorbing large numbers of internally displaced people who had nowhere else to turn. The infrastructure of such tent cities remains highly vulnerable, offering little to no protection against military strikes.
The conflict in Gaza began following the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed approximately 1,200 people and saw around 250 taken hostage. Israel's subsequent military campaign has drawn widespread international scrutiny, particularly regarding the mounting civilian toll and the conditions faced by displaced populations within the territory.
The Israeli military had not immediately issued a statement regarding the strike on the displacement camp at the time of reporting. International calls for a ceasefire and improved protection of civilian areas have thus far failed to produce a lasting halt to the fighting.
